This morning, Ms. Fraley’s classroom had a special visit from Officer Michael Rothermel and K9 Buddy from the Berea Police Department! 🐾

Officer Rothermel shared what it’s like to serve as a police officer, and introduced students to Berea PD's resident therapy dog, K9 Buddy!

Therapy dogs are trained, affectionate dogs that play an important role in supporting both officers and the community, offering comfort in a variety of situations. And we made sure everyone got a chance to give him plenty of love and pets!

We’re always grateful to welcome our friends from the Berea Police Department and help students learn more about the people who serve and protect our community every day.

Berea holds onto 3rd place in the Recycling is Like Magic Million Cans Contest! ♻️

Since October, our school has collected an incredible 18,248 cans, but we’re not done yet. With the contest running through April 30, we’re aiming to push that total even higher!

Throughout the state of Kentucky, more than 500,000 aluminum cans have been recycled this year thanks to the Recycling is Like Magic Million Cans Contest. Such an incredible way to stay mindful of our waste and bring our school communities together.

Let's keep that momentum going until the end of the month! Save your empty aluminum cans and drop them off at the school to help Berea finish strong! 💪

Congratulations to our Anchor of Excellence recipients! ⚓

Each month, the Anchor of Excellence recognition will honor a small selection of employees and community members, highlighting the outstanding work happening across our district and celebrating staff members who consistently go above and beyond for students, colleagues, and our school community.

This month, a special community recognition goes out to the Hembree and Parke families. Throughout the year, Jared and Amanda Hembree, along with Steve and Christina Parke, have taken on significant leadership roles within the booster club and have been instrumental in supporting our boys basketball program. Their efforts played a vital role in raising funds that directly supported equipment purchases, team gear, pre-game meals, the banquet, and other essential program needs. What stands out just as much as their effort is their humility. When thanked, they consistently respond, “We do it all for the kids.” Their commitment truly reflects the work ethic, pride, and selflessness we strive to instill in our student-athletes.

This month’s first classified employee recognition goes to Linda Dean, who consistently demonstrates an exceptional level of dedication, compassion, and professionalism that goes well beyond what is expected in her role. Linda is deeply committed to the well-being of our students and their families. One example of her dedication is her willingness to take home her class pets over spring break, ensuring they are well cared for and providing continuity for her students when they return.

Our next recognition goes to our Technology Director, Daniel Montoya. Daniel is involved with almost everything that happens behind the scenes at BCS. He leads with a sense of humor and also humility. He understands what it means to be selfless, and dedicated to the craft and the profession. He goes out of his way to instill leadership capabilities in to his students, and teach them not only how to be good digital citizens, but also how to help contribute to their school community. We wish him the best at his new position at Berea College.

Next is our chief academic officer, Mr. Tim Molton, who wears many hats and works tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly at both the Board Office and our schools. From overseeing state and federal reporting to ensuring testing sessions are properly organized and implemented, his attention to detail is essential to our daily operations. He also serves as our site-based coordinator, providing guidance and training to our site-based teams. We truly commend Mr. Molton for his ongoing efforts, he is someone we can always depend on to handle the many responsibilities critical to the operation of our schools. We greatly appreciate the experience he brings and the diligence he demonstrates in keeping us compliant and moving in the right direction.

Our next recognition goes to Mr. Joseph Caudill. Joseph is a high-quality collaborator and resourceful teacher. Joseph has built exceptional relationships with his students and his colleagues. The sharpest dressed in the building, he maintains an air of professionalism and quality unsurpassed by many of his peers. He has become a pillar of the building in a short amount of time.

Congratulations to all of our Anchor of Excellence recipients, we couldn't be more grateful for everything you invest in our schools and communities.

Mrs. Parker's 4th Grade class is getting an up-close look at cow eyes!

On Thursday, Superintendent Dr. Neaves joined students in Mrs. Parker's class to learn all about eye anatomy by taking a look at the inner-workings of a real cow eye!

Working in groups, students carefully dissected the eyes while taking notes and identifying the complex structures that make vision possible. Some were a little squeamish, others completely fascinated, but every student walked away with a deeper understanding of how our eyes (and those of animals) work.

Experiences like this bring learning to life, helping students connect concepts to real-world understanding in a meaningful way. A huge thank-you to Mrs. Parker for creating such engaging, memorable lessons that challenge students to step outside their comfort zones and truly explore science.

Way to go, BCES!

JAG students are headed to nationals, thanks to our incredible community partners like the Berea Kiwanis Club!

BCHS JAG students were honored to receive a donation from the Berea Kiwanis Club in support of their upcoming trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will compete in the JAG National Career Development Competition against other students from across the United States.

The students qualified in the area of Project Based Learning & Outstanding JAG Chapter. This opportunity will allow our students to strengthen their leadership skills and gain valuable experiences that they will bring back to Kentucky to share with their fellow JAG members.

This marks our 13th annual visit through our valued partnership with Han Herred Efterskole. Each year, this exchange also gives our students the incredible opportunity to travel abroad and experience life and learning in Denmark.

3rd Grade Weaving with Berea College Student Craft! 🧶

This week, Ms. May's classroom was visited by Berea College Student Craft Outreach Director Steve Davis-Rosenbaum for a lesson on weaving!

3rd graders were guided through the creative process of yarn weaving on a bowl loom, designing their own unique pieces while experimenting with colors, patterns, and techniques, and learning about weaving as an important tradition in Appalachian craft.

We are so thankful for this wonderful partnership with our neighbors right up the hill at Berea College. We couldn't be more excited to offer our students this hands-on experience, learning from experts, and applying their skills to make one-of-a-kind works of art. Thanks to their generous support, all instruction and materials are offered at no cost to students.

We can’t wait to see these beautiful projects come to life! ✨

PE Students Practice Their Golf Swings! ⛳️

The front lawn was full of action this morning as students in Mr. Bingham’s PE classes worked on their golf swings (8th grade pictured)!

Taking turns driving balls across the field, students learned about proper stance, technique, and control, while enjoying some fresh air and sunshine in the process.

It’s always exciting to see students explore new sports, challenge themselves, and discover new interests. We might have some future golfers here in the making!

4th Grade is Planting in Raised Beds! 🌱

Before heading off for Spring Break, Ms. Parker’s 4th graders got their hands dirty planting in their raised beds outside the school!

So far, these green thumbs have planted onions, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, sugar snap peas, beets, and strawberries. We can’t wait to see the beds begin to sprout and come to life!

It’s amazing to see our students engaging with real soil and learning how fruits and vegetables grow through firsthand experience. There’s nothing like feeling the dirt in their hands and watching the fruits of their labor begin to grow, literally!

A big thank you to Ms. Erlena Parker for giving our students this fun, hands-on learning experience outside the classroom! 🌼
