Let’s give a big shoutout to Avery Plessinger, who officially signed her National Letter of Intent yesterday to continue her basketball career at the University of Northwestern Ohio!
This is such an exciting milestone in Avery's future, and we can't wait to see everything she goes on to accomplish. Join us in wishing her the very best as she takes this exciting step toward her future! 🏀

For the first time ever, BCHS has scored in the Blue Tier, the highest performance level in Kentucky’s Summative Assessment Accountability System!
Our overall score jumped from 56.1 (Orange) last year to an impressive 87.8 this year—an extraordinary achievement made possible by our students’ hard work and by our teachers’ and staff’s unwavering dedication to standards-based instruction, holding all students accountable while providing the support they need, mentoring, and encouraging every student to reach their fullest potential.
We couldn’t be more proud of this historic accomplishment. Join us in celebrating by wearing BLUE this Friday! 💙

Elementary and High School are learning about fire safety together!
This morning, Mr. Billings’ Fire Science class took the stage outside our Kindergarten classrooms for a hands-on presentation about fire safety. Our Fire Science students demonstrated various tools and gadgets a firefighter might use in an emergency, and explained the importance of having a safety plan at home.
For our Kindergarten students, a fully suited firefighter can seem intimidating at first, so or Fire Science students focused on showing them the person underneath, and familiarizing them with all the firefighter equipment.
Demystifying these concepts makes all the difference, helping students understand and trust our local emergency responders, which is paramount in a real emergency situation.
It’s always special to see our Elementary and High School students collaborate on projects like this, educating learners from both ends of their BCS journey and helping break down barriers between the schools. You could tell many of the High Schoolers remembered being on the other side of a presentation like this, and that full-circle moment is a meaningful experience—both for our students, and the educators who get to watch these kids grow and change over the years.
A huge thank-you to Mr. Billings and his Fire Science class, as well as all our Kindergarten teachers and staff, for giving our students this valuable opportunity right outside their classrooms!

The evening kicked off with a hype-filled introduction of this year’s teams, followed by a series of intense, fast-paced scrimmages that had the crowd on its feet from start to finish.
A huge shoutout to this year's Pirate Basketball Teams! If this preview was any indication, we’re in for an explosive winter sports season. We can’t wait to see YOU in the stands the next time our Pirates hit the court! 🏀

A look back at Homecoming Week 2025... through our students’ eyes 👀📸
Last month, we sent out a couple students with point-and-shoot cameras to capture all the Homecoming week activities from their own perspective. Safe to say, the results did not disappoint, they took the idea and ran with it!
From the Homecoming Bonfire to the "Under the Sea" themed dance, they snapped candid moments, funny faces, and school spirit in full swing. We pulled their photos together into one big collage with our Homecoming King front and center (by popular demand- since he hadn't been featured during Homecoming Week 👑) a snapshot of what it means to be a student at BCHS.
This is Berea. This is students connecting with their school community and celebrating their Pirate traditions. They're excited about their school, and so are we!

A Pirate for 13 years, Jayden 's favorite memory at Berea has been spending time with friends. Her favorite teacher has been Mrs. Jones, who she says has helped her a lot in school. After graduation, Jayden plans to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Everyone give a hand for Jayden Alewine 👏
We can't wait to see what's next for you! 🎓

Let’s give a big round of applause to our incredible Academic Team Seniors, who were recognized at Tuesday’s Senior Night before their matchup with Madison Central. They were acknowledged for their contributions to the team, including their efforts in facilitating Berea's first time at NAQT's Small School National Championship Tournament.
These students show us every day what it means to be a leader, a trailblazer, and a scholar. They set the bar high for our Academic Team, and our school, and we're proud to have them representing our student body. Everyone give it up for Elaina Kirby, Cerra Miller, and Mady O'Bryan!

This morning, our Middle and High School students came together in Singleton Gym to celebrate Veterans Day and honor the local heroes who have served our country. It was a morning filled with gratitude, reflection, and appreciation for the veterans in our community.
The program featured performances by the BCHS Band and Choir, directed by Mr. and Mrs. Barnhill, as well as inspiring speeches from students who shared what Veterans Day means to them.
After the assembly, veterans and their families were invited to enjoy a meal in the back atrium, graciously served by our FCCLA students.
We extend our sincere thanks to all the veterans who joined us today, we are so proud to recognize your service and sacrifice.
Special thanks to our JAG and FCCLA programs, Mr. Trussell, and everyone who helped organize this meaningful event. Your hard work made today truly special!

Congratulations to our BCS Archers! 🎯
We’re so proud of their outstanding performance and placement at the BCS 10m Warm up! 👏 Keep aiming high!

Last Thursday, we celebrated our incredible seniors at the Senior Night Football Game, a group that truly embodies the Berea spirit, on and off the field.
From your ambition, to your dedication to your teams and communities, you guys remind us what Berea is all about. Go PIRATES!🏴☠️

Last Thursday, students and parents gathered in Singleton Gym to celebrate our JAG students and initiate officers at the 2025 JAG Initiation and Installation Ceremony.
As explained by freshman Gabby Harris, "JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) is a program in our school district that helps students become ready for the real world when we graduate."
JAG focuses on giving students the opportunity to develop soft and hard skills that may not otherwise be taught in their core classes. It's about fostering those traits that will help them succeed in professional environments. How to properly present yourself, what language to use, etc.
If you spend any time at all around these students, it's impossible to miss the fundamental impact the JAG program has on many of them. From their handshakes and confident eye contact to the professionalism of their emails, the degree to which they apply these skills outside of the classroom is astounding.
Susie Harris and Nikki McHenry spearhead these programs with stewardship and integrity like you wouldn't believe, teaching our students lessons they'll carry with them throughout their professional life. We deeply appreciate the work they’re doing.
It was great to see this program recognized and celebrated at the ceremony, along with all the students, staff, and community members who make JAG what it is. Congratulations to all those initiated officers, and thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success.

The evening kicked off with the crowning of our Homecoming King and Queen, Jonah Hill and Samone Burgess. Congratulations to both! We had an incredible lineup of Pirate candidates this year, and we’re so thankful to all the families and fans who came out to cheer them on.
Meanwhile, the BCHS Class of ’95 reunited for a tailgate celebration! It was great to see some familiar faces back on campus to spend an evening catching up and enjoying the game.
To keep spirits high (and everyone warm!), our Chili Cook-Off served up hot bowls of homemade chili, while the Pep Band and Majorettes took the spotlight for their Taylor Swift-themed halftime show. And to top it all off, our Pirates took home a sweeping victory! 🏆
We’re so proud of our Pirate athletes and grateful for the community spirit that made this such a memorable end to Homecoming Week 2025. Thank you to everyone who helped make it a success!

They enjoyed a fun game about Art History, created art in the drawing/painting and clay studios, and toured the Giles Art Gallery with Melissa Vandenberg, where they viewed the exhibit “Dividends: Kentucky Arts Council Grantee Retrospective.”
This is always a wonderful learning and creative experience for the students. They love participating.
A huge thank you to everyone who made this experience possible:
Ilona Szekely, Melissa Vandenberg, Isaac Powell, Ian Mabry, Amanda Strasik,
the Art Education Student Association, EKU Art and Design, Giles Gallery, and the Kentucky Arts Council.

Good vibes all around at this year's Homecoming Bonfire! 🔥
After Thursday's Homecoming Parade, students gathered on the front lawn to enjoy the warmth of an impressive bonfire, made possible by Mr. Billings and the Berea Fire Department. Everyone enjoyed s’mores and hot dogs served by our wonderful FRYSC staff, and spent the evening laughing and chatting with friends as Homecoming Week came to a close.
For many alumni, this classic Berea tradition is among their fondest memories at Berea Community Schools. It was so special to bring it back for a new generation of Pirates to enjoy. We're already looking forward to next year!
We'd like to give a huge thanks to all our community partners and volunteers who helped make this year's Homecoming activities such a success. Thank you to the City of Berea, Berea Fire Department, Berea Police Department, Big Hill Jeep Club, Walmart, Domino's, Raising Cane's, Lori McCay, and all the parade float drivers, builders, and candidate drivers, for their time, donations and support.
