Greetings Pirate Friends and Family,
Thank you for sharing your opinions, thoughts and ideas to advocate for student success. Our students are why we are all here. We may have different viewpoints on the position of principal verses an assistant principal. But not one person in this district has anything but "students" best interest at the heart of it all. Our students are why we exist. We have a moral and ethical responsibility to provide the tools, resources and support necessary so that students graduate college, career and / or life ready. Teaching, learning and student achievement must be at the center of it all. At the building level the buck stops with the principal. The principal is the instructional leader. He or she understands the needs, the developmental stages and the accountability process. Hiring two principals now is what in my opinion is best for kids. From the very beginning these administrators will have the power to engage others in the process, to model the way and to encourage the heart with zeal and enthusiasm. There is no better time than now to aim high and dare to be great for kids.
Simply put, "It's Maslow before Blooms." Having a middle and high school principal will increase academic, social, emotional and behavioral support for students. It will also provide the opportunity for increased teacher interactions and feedback not to mention student and staff voice. We aren't a one-size-fits-all district, nor are we a system of schools within a building. We are a school system that takes great pride p-12 in being a community of leaders and learners.
This is an exciting time for Berea Community Schools. As we step forward with boldness into the next fifty years on a quest towards continuous improvement, we will be mindful of all the things that make Berea Community Schools special. In the spirit of a growth mindset, as times change and students needs continue to evolve, we must change as well. We must be willing to stretch ourselves, take risks, collaborate and think outside the box. In doing so, we will be able to ensure that our "students" are afforded every opportunity possible. We aren't throwing the baby out with the bath water. What we are doing is putting students developmental and academic needs first, foremost and at the center on every level P-12
My goal is always to look for ways to build capacity and promote continuous improvement through the lens of a growth mindset in order to best meet the instructional, social and emotional needs of students at different maturation levels. The board voted unanimously to create the position of middle school principal and a high school principal on Monday night. The jobs were posted yesterday and we hope to introduce the new principals at graduation. It is a great time to be a Pirate! We are Kid Driven!
