Superintendent's Message

Diane Hatchett

Greetings Berea Community Family,

Welcome Back! It is a great year to be a Pirate!I hope that each of you had a wonderful break. Now it is time to forge ahead with excitement and zeal. There’s nothing more exhilarating than the promise of a new year. So many possibilities and great ideas to share. So much important work to do!  This year has the potential to be great or disappointing; productive or mundane; successful or failing. The only type of failure that I would even entertain is one in which we fail forward, learn from our mistakes and become open to new ideas. It is part of the growth mindset. Pirates are innovators, creators of their own destiny. Our fate and those of our children are based on the choices we make each and every day. We don't teach just subjects, we teach people. People matter! That is why at Berea Community we meet our students where they are and bring them up.

In 2019 and beyond may we continue to be a school district of choice for so many. A school district with a tradition of being a true community partner. One dedicated to ensuring opportunity for all students. We are indeed kid driven. Let's keep our focus on preparing our students for college, career and life. In order for our students to be future ready we must instill the 7 Habits, a growth mindset and grit, coupled with personalization, innovation, compassion, accountability, open-mindedness, trust, purpose and positivity. We have all the ingredients to make this year memorable but most of all impactful and meaningful to kids. I don't know about you, but kids are the reason that I do what I do. I love kids! They are my passion.

I hope you commit to making this the best year yet for the students in Berea Community Schools, and for yourself. I know that’s easy to say on the first day of school. I also know how difficult it becomes as we deal with the many challenges our students and families face on a daily basis. But remember this, our students represent our present, our greatest dreams and our hope for the future. Their fate in many ways is in our hands. More and more districts across the nation are being asked to take on more and more. It can be a daunting and overwhelming task when you stop and reflect upon all the mandates.

Nonetheless, my promise is that the Central Office staff and I will do all in our power to support you. We will work alongside you through good times and bad this school year to get more of our students learning, succeeding, graduating. We are a team. We’re in this together. The prize is well worth the struggle. Teamwork makes the dream work. So, let's aim high and dare to be great!  Together, we can and will make a difference for and on behalf of our students. This is an exciting time! Let's keep the momentum going with high expectations for ourselves but most of all for our students. Our students deserve 110% of all we have to offer. Never loose sight of the role that you play in our students' lives. You are difference makers whether you are the cook, the custodian, counselor, coach, resource officer, teacher, administrator, bus driver, FRYSC Director, 21st Century Director, therapist, parent volunteer, member of Central Office, board member or school support staff. Thank you for all that you do! You are awesome! I can't thank you enough for the hours that you put in above and beyond the school day. The time, energy and true love of learning are what makes Berea Community Schools simply the best! What a gift you are to our students, our district and the community. #LeadLearnWorkLikeAPirate #AimHighAndDaretoBeGreat
