Superintendent's Message

Diane Hatchett

Dear Pirate Family,

Today is my one year anniversary. It was on this day that I signed my contract to become a Pirate effective Jan. 1, 2018. I am grateful for the opportunity that the board has given me. Our board members are among the best in the state. Like each of you, they truly care about students. They are dedicated leaders who value public education and student success. It is my privilege to work with them as superintendent of Berea Community Schools.

In addition to the board members, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with each of you on behalf of our students and community. It takes a village to educate a child. This Thanksgiving I want to say thank you for the incredible devotion that you show to teaching and learning. You are difference makers who inspire students to be the best that they can be, to aim high and dare to be great! Thank you for doing the extra things that matter, something as simple as a smile or a word of encouragement can make difference in more ways than you could ever imagine.

Our kids know that you care. They see it, they hear it and they feel it. When our students speak of Berea Community, they do so with pride in their voices. Yesterday, when I met with the Superintendent Advisory Council, the students talked about what it means to them to be a part of Berea Community Schools. They talked about the reasons why we are so special. Our students mentioned lots and lots of things that you do for them that they appreciate such as the relationships, mentoring, sense of family, opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities, the acceptance of differences, opportunities to be creative and unique, to have tutoring, familial support, not to mention the nudges and pushes which challenge them to stretch themselves beyond their wildest dreams.

As superintendent, and on behalf of our students, thank you for all that you do each day from sunrise to sunset. You are my heroes! You are champions for kids because you always rise to the occasion no matter what. There is nothing that you wouldn't do for our kids or for one another. Being a part of Berea Community is being a part of an extended family of learners. We laugh together and cry together! Most of all, we lead together. You are all leaders who strive to improve the lives of students from your own area of influence. United we stand, together we empower and build capacity for future generations.

Berea Community Schools is a special place! We are beyond a shadow of a doubt kid driven! I am honored to be a part of the Berea Community Schools family. Thank you for welcoming me this past year and allowing me to be part of the Pirate family. It is a gift that I treasure and do not take for granted. The strength of Berea Community lies in our relationships with our students, their families and one another; not to mention the unwavering commitment to providing a well-rounded education. I hope that each of you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Be safe!
